Movie Review: Laura’s Toys

Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon one of Joe Sarno’s softcore classics starring Rebecca Brooke, Eric Edwards, Cathija Graff, and Anita Eriksson. This sizzling gem, filmed in 1975, has all the wonderful things an adult film should have; a unique story, an effective cast and Hollywood production quality.

The Story:
A wife (Rabecca Brooke), her archeologist husband (Eric Edwards), and his assistant (Cathjia Graff) are on an island in Sweden where the husband and his assistant are to study ancient ruins. The primary plot consists of the assistant’s longing for the husband/archeologist and later the drawing in of the assistant by the wife and husband to form a threesome. The secondary plot is that the wife has two childhood friends who arrive on the mainland for a sexfest. It’s a tradition they’ve always had that the three of them would vacation together every year and have a sexfest. However the wife doesn’t want to participate in it anymore and so she struggles with the co-dependent relationship she has with her childhood friend (Anita Eriksson). Her childhood friend keeps trying to get her to participate. Throughout the movie there is back-story about the sexual things they did while in boarding school (this is where Joe Sarno seems to always throw some borderline shit in his films about the sexual escapades of young girls. I really think he needed counseling.). Meanwhile the studious assistant keeps dropping thoughts to the husband about how his wife doesn’t understand him or his work. You know… trying to snatch him. Every now and then the couple gives the impression that the plan was to live as a threesome all along and that they are working together to warm the assistant up to it. You can also tell the assistant is interested in the wife as well but she’s very much afraid of that side of herself. She didn’t want to get carried away by it. There is a lot of really fantastic sex in the film as well but it is softcore so don’t expect to see penetration up close and personal or any dicks. I could go on an on about this storyline but I would recommend you watch it for yourself. It is was a well developed story and the ending was absolutely brilliant (as adult films go).

The Cast:
Eric Edwards, who plays the archeologist and husband, seems to have been in nearly every popular adult film made in the 70s and early 80s. His acting is always on point and pretty impressive given the genre. I’ve seen Anita Eriksson, who plays the wife’s childhood friend who refuses to grow up, in a couple of Swedish adult films. She was weird in this film and pretty weird in the others too but, she was prefect for this movie. What makes Anita Eriksson so odd at times is the fact that she speaks very low and nearly monotone. But still, she managed to pull off a couple of good lines. The real icing on this cake was Rebecca Brooke, who played the wife. This was the first film I’d seen her in so it was quite a treat. Her acting was mostly natural with a few little “Brookisms” in the mix. Some of the great moments weren’t from dialogue but from Rebecca’s looks and body language. One example was when she was trying to get Eric to admit he and Cathija had slept together. There was a moment where she smiled at him when he looked at her (while lying) but when he looked away, her smile dropped abruptly (because she knew he was lying). It was great. Another time was when she was telling Cathija she wanted to take her to see her childhood friend. The look she gave Cathija just before walking away was fantastic. Another was the supreme stare down she gave Cathija when she’d decided to seduce her (my personal favorite). Cathija’s acting was good as well. She had a tendency to get mechanical a little bit but it worked very well for her character. I’ve never seen her in another movie and I can’t really say that I want to. I would have liked to have seen a different person play her role. She didn’t look “studious” enough.

The Quality:
The production quality of this film is top notch as are all the other Sarno films I’ve seen. Made in the 70′s, it’s from an era when adult movies were real films, not videos, clips, and shots. This meant they were lit like films, shot like films, and edited like films. It’s a complete erotic entertainment experience. I noticed in Sarno’s films, particularly the ones featuring Rebecca Brooke, he does a lot of scenes where she faces the camera and delivers a monologue with another character standing off to the side just behind her. There are so many of these scenes in his movies, it’s bizarre. It has the feel of a stage play. As a matter of fact, Rebecca Brooke’s acting is very much like stage acting sometimes in this film. I think it was more so in Confessions of an American Housewife and definitely noticeable in Abigail Lesley Is Back in Town. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It would be interesting to see more stage acting on film. As a matter of fact, my favorite movie, The Bad Seed (1956), was filmed using almost the entire cast from the Broadway play, “The Bad Seed”. The stage actors were instructed to act exactly how they do on stage on Broadway and this really made the movie and outstanding work of art.

Overall this is definitely one of my favorite adult films and I really enjoy watching it. Where they shot the film for sure will make you wish you were there.

Laying Off The Haterade

If I never see another porno again, it will be too soon. Don’t get me wrong, when I find a good one, it’s wonderful, however, I spent last week and the weekend watching about 100 or so awful adult films and I’ve had it for now.

I think I simply need to be more selective. I thought, well what good is it to do movie ratings if I don’t deal with whatever comes my way? Well now the question is, what good are movie ratings if 99% of them are terrible? So I’ve decided to be more selective in the movies I choose to rate. I think this way, the ratings will be more useful and be more applicable to individual films rather than my attitude towards certain types of films.

This will be pretty difficult since “anything goes” in porn and you can’t really predict what you’ll end up watching. But for now, I’ll lay off the Haterade (well, after this batch I have to hate on tonight). All is fair in love and porn. Cheers!

Movie Review: Dr. Black Love – 1986

I’ll start by saying this… Any lover of women should be required to attend Sharon Mitchell’s school of high quality pussy eating. The woman has skills.

I decided to watch this film because I just had to see what kind of craziness they could come up with for a title like Dr. Black Love. I was quite delighted with this film most of the time. I must say I did want to punch the guy playing the orderly. I mean, he might as well have been in black face. The best part is the scene where Nina Hartley is playing the wig wearing country bumpkin. It was both amusing and very cute. The acting during this scene was excellent as well and felt very real. *Smile*

Movie Review: Inside Jennifer Welles

This movie actually had to grow on me. I think it was because it took me a long time to actually watch it all the way through. I admit I wasn’t giving it a chance before. But upon further review, I do find it has a lot of qualities that most other adult films do not have. When I finally did watch it all the way through, I was delighted. I loved the idea of the main character (Jennifer Wells) narrating it as if she were reading her diary. She did a wonderful job and it made the film even more erotic. Movie Review: Women Seeking Women 49

This was the first volume of the “Women Seeking Women” series that I watched. I was so impressed with this volume I watched a few more. However those didn’t come close to being as good as this one.

Story 1 – This story was fantastic on so many levels. First of all, the acting again was wonderful. The story itself was very believable and felt like “real life”. But there were also some important social elements in this story as well (i.e. friendship, closeness, relationships, intimacy, etc.). I also like that the two women were about the same age and the storyline supported a theme of two young people of the same age experiencing sex on an equal level. There wasn’t that sort of predatory older person/younger person dynamic. These two women also had an incredible sexual chemistry as well. The sex was very very sensual and I really enjoyed it. There was a lot of great kissing (not that childish porn kissing), sensual touching, body kissing, hugging, skin-to-skin, breast caressing, etc. If someone were to ask me what adult movie they should watch if they were exploring their sexuality, it would be this one.

Story 2 – This story was also very stimulating. If you are like myself and enjoy verbal stimulation, you will love this one. *Smile* Again, excellent acting going on in this one as well. There wasn’t a whole lot of context supplied for this story but it was still good. It was established that these two women were roommates but there was no context about why the younger one shouldn’t go to a party where there would be drinking when she is clearly old enough to want to attend. Which lead me to wonder if they were in a rehab or something. Hahaha Anyway, the chemistry here was fantastic. There was a LOT of body contact and these ladies appeared to truly enjoy each others bodies. They could have done without the strap on scene however, they just couldn’t get a good rhythm going. But the first two stories were amazing enough to still make this a good watch.

Movie Review: Barbara Broadcast

Ahhh Barbara Broadcast… One of my favorites for the sheer craziness of it. I believe this was the first classic adult film I watched and I was completely amazed at the wild story. Some wouldn’t think it was wild by today’s standards since we seem to take everything to the abyss now but I thought it was definitely imaginative. My favorite scenes were when Barbara Broadcast (Annette Haven) and Roberta, the reporter (C.J. Movie Review: Girls in White 6

Story 1 – This made me laugh. A lot. And hard. Anyway. Very cute. Heather brings a lot of energy to the scene. What the fuck? I’ll say it again. What the fuck? Who came up with this shit? Ok so the first “story” was about this chick who was in near agony most of the time because her tits were too big (I don’t think so!) and some lady (one can assume is her mom) got some cream from the doctor that is supposed to help and hopefully eliminate the need for surgery. What the fuck? Is it titty shrinking cream? Whatever, the point here is this is a PORNO. No one wants to hear about someone suffering and trying to avoid surgery when trying to get aroused. I just kept thinking “how in the hell are they going to make THIS work?” and “how are they going to resolve this?” Think about it just from a storytelling perspective here. This is an adult film where people expect sex at some point. So if she has this boob problem where she can’t even stand the slightest touch and she’s looking absolutely miserable the whole time, how on earth are you going to bring on the sex? And no, it didn’t work, her boob pain just miraculously went away not long after she was complaining about how she could barely stand having the magic cream put on.

Story # 2 was ok. It was somewhat sensual for a little while. I couldn’t get too into it because one of the chicks reminded me of a scary android woman from a video game. She even kinda sounded like an android. But she had her sensual going for a little while.

Movie Review: Women Seeking Women 48

Story 1 – This was pretty cute. It was a simple, believable story. Although, if my friend was following me around my house while I was trying to get ready to go somewhere, we might have some problems. …But Elexis is cute so I think I would probably make an exception. *Smile*

Story 2 – I was pleasantly surprised by this one because the women were speaking Spanish and there were subtitles. It kinda brings you out of “sameness”. I thought they were going to go to the abyss with the gyno tools but they didn’t (thank goodness). The one chick played herself with that fake blonde hair. What a shame. Story 1 – Two things… 1. Tube tops are wrong no matter how fine you are. 2. Blue walls always look horrible in films. It would have been more interesting to see them have sex on the floor than on the boring bed with the boring blue wall as a backdrop. Story 2 – This is one of the times I’m damn impressed by the acting in adult films these days. I thought this story was cute and the talent did a good job with acting it out. Let me just add a few comments though on one or two issues.

First I echo the writer who moaned the lack of quality adult films. I get really put off by the films available where there’s no plot or story line but just pounding of flesh. There’s no finesse in the lovemaking. Then there’s the issue of limp dicks sometimes! I must say though that this (pounding flesh) is not cultural amongst us black people, well, at least from Zimbabwe here! Five years ago my grandfather in his 80s was telling me about foreplay, how I must never rush a woman but must take time to satisfy her. He spoke at length about making sure the mood was right, caressing and fondling and the actual act! I was shocked since I had grown up reading white books and ended up assuming that culturally black men are rough towards their women.
